History of the C&M (China) Law Office
The firm was
established in 1992 following the open door policy and a strategy
to reform the legal and lawyer's system in China. At that time,
all law firms in China were state-owned and run law offices all
over the country, causing foreign investors hesitating to come to
China because no one could be sure there was not any conflict of
interest between them and Chinese governments. On the other hand,
a lot of promises or preferential treatment were made by the governments
at all levels to the foreign investors, who can be appointed to
represent them and protect their interest in China in case law dispute
arising since all law firms were state-owned and run?
In response
to the call mainly from abroad and with the support of some high
officials who were keen on the reform, a number of pioneers in international
legal practice were encouraged to establish private partnership
with special approval as a try to work especially for foreign traders
who have a business in China.
Today, all the
state-owned and run law firms must be re-registered as private law
firms within given time according to a policy adopted in 2000.
There are altogether
about 100,000 lawyers and 10,000 law firms in China. C&M (China)
Law Office is one of them.
